Under Rugs

As implied, an under rug is used under other types of rugs for additional warmth and to protect from the friction of other rugs.

A Witney Blanket, which is pure wool and usually a golden yellow with black and red stripes, is a traditional under rug for a stabled horse. An under rug, or under blanket, goes over the horse’s back and neck with the front corners turned up and placed on the horse’s withers. In order to prevent the under blanket from moving around underneath the stable rug, a roller needs to be placed between the stable rug and the under blanket.

Under rugs were commonly known as under blankets and resemble lightweight stable rugs. There are varying under blankets that are designed to be used with stable rugs, turnout rugs and New Zealand rugs.

There are some varieties of under blankets which are use under stable rugs and include a neck cover. The neck cover provides warmth or is folded back over the stable rug much like the traditional Witney blanket.
