Turnout Rugs
The purpose of the turnout rug is twofold; it is used to keep the horse clean and dry while outdoors and to keep the horse warm in the winter. You can find turnout rugs, which are constructed of waterproof synthetic material, in a wide variety of colours, weights and thickness and warmth.
Heavyweight turnout rugs contain more than 300 grams of filling and medium weight turnout rugs contain 150 to 300 grams of filling. There are two types of lightweight turnout rugs; the summer turnout rug has no filling and the winter turnout rug contains up to 150 grams of filling.
If extra warmth is needed with a turnout rug, an under rug or under blanket can be used. Using an under rug or under blanket is a more economical investment as you can use these to layer with a lightweight turnout rug rather than purchasing several different types of turnout rugs for use with each season.
The turnout rug is lighter in weight than the traditional New Zealand rug and is not as prone to chafing the horse’s shoulders, chest and withers. You must ensure that the turnout rug is not too tight around the horse’s neck and chest areas.
For the best protection of the horse during inclement weather, the turnout rug should be long enough that the horse’s belly is fully covered with some overlap in the front. For more freedom of movement there are some turnout rugs constructed with pleating the shoulder area.
The type of turnout rugs called combo have an integrated neck cover; others have a removable neck cover for convenience.
The synthetic material that turnout rugs have historically been made of has been known to snag and tear on branches, barbed wire or other things; more so than the traditional New Zealand rugs. However, there is now a material called “ripstop” that many turnout rugs are made of which lessens the occurrences of ripping and tearing.
Cross surcingles are used to hold the turnout rugs in place and are passed from the front of one side of the horse, under its belly, and then fastened toward the rear. The cross surcingles are then passed from the rear, under the belly of the horse and fastened at the front.
The majority of turnout rugs have hind leg straps which are fastened by passing and linking two straps between the horse’s hind legs. There should be sufficient room, a hand’s width, to adjust the leg straps. Otherwise loose straps will allow the horse’s hooves to get caught up when the horse is lying down and tight straps will cause uncomfortable chafing.
There are turnout rugs that have a fillet string rather than leg straps. However, the leg straps help prevent the rug from slipping if the horse rolls and the fillet strips do not.
Turnout rugs normally don’t need to be reproofed in order to retain their waterproof qualities and are made of breathable material to keep moisture at bay, which is different than the New Zealand rugs.
